The Chinese have practiced acupuncture and Chinese herbal therapy for more than 2000 years. Traditional Chinese Medicine treats individuals by influencing the flow of "Qi" through distinct pathways in the body. These pathways are referred to as "meridians" or "channels" and they cover the body in a network similar to the network of blood and lymphatic vessels. Acupuncture is the insertion of fine needles into the body at specific points along these meridians. Chinese Herbs and acupuncture are used to restore health by moving Qi to areas where it is deficient and away from areas where it is in excess. Although Chinese medicine has gained popularity in the West primarily for its treatment of pain, it is establishing itself as an effective alternative therapy for many health problems. Chinese medicine can treat acute and chronic conditions and may also be used to promote health. Modern science cannot explain how acupuncture or Chinese herbal therapy works. Recent research suggests that acupuncture may stimulate the release of endorphins (our bodys natural painkillers).
